Departmental Farms

Livestock Farms

The Department has 14 farms comprising:

• Eight livestock farms
• Three sheep farms
• One poultry farm
• One fodder seed production farm

Objectives of the Departmental Farms

• Demonstration and Awareness: To serve as demonstration units for creating awareness among farmers about modern farming practices.
• Best Animal Husbandry Practices: To disseminate expertise for enhancing the production and productivity of livestock in the State.
• Frozen Semen Production: Three frozen semen stations viz, Eachenkottai, Hosur and Ooty produce disease free, high genetic merit frozen semen straws including sex sorted semen straws.
• Sale of Genetically Superior Livestock: Breeding and sale of genetically superior calves, lambs, kids, piglets and day old chicks to the farmers.
• In-vitro Fertilization facility at Hosur: To produce disease free, high genetic merit bull calves for frozen semen production.
• Sex Sorted Semen Production at Ooty: To produce heifer calves.
• Training and Capacity Building at Naduvur and Hosur: To impart training to the farmers on best management practices and refresher training to veterinarians and para veterinarians.

Conservation of Native Breeds

Native Cattle Breeds of Tamil Nadu are conserved in the departmental livestock farms: Kangeyam, Bargur, Pulikulam at District Livestock Farm, Hosur and Umbalachery Breed at Livestock Farm, Korukkai. Other indigenous breeds viz., Red Sindhi is conserved at DLF, Hosur, Tharparkar and Sahiwal breeds at DLF, Chettinad and Sahiwal breed at DLF, Abishegapatti.
